The San Pedro Cactus . The San Pedro cactus is night blooming, Its white flowers, in July, are up to 9 inches in diameter (22 cm)Trichocereus Pachanoi (San Pedro Cactus) is the most common and well known of the Trichocereus. It was named after Saint Peter supposedly because it was, like Peter, thought to hold the keys to heaven. Trichocereus Pachanoi has been known and used ceremonially, for it's mescaline content, for over 3000 years and there is evidence to suggest cultivation of Trichocerus pachanoi in Peru from 2200 B. C.Reports published in scholarly journals have shown San Pedro to sometimes be twice as strong as some, but not all, peyote.NB. This is the true pachanoi . We have been growing it from seed for over 20 years. There is a rare spineless form which we are now propagating (Available 2009!) but the spineless (Quite thin) one often offered in the trade is actually scopulicolus - a form of T. bridgesii (or T. lageniformis). The vast majority of pachanoi seedlings (99%) have spines of varying lengths. Click here for a FREE printable page of beautiful San Pedro flowers
In order to answer some of the many questions we receive concerning the "San Pedro" group of Trichocereus, we have compiled notes on this genus. The notes are mostly a compilation of information obtained from the internet on all aspects of naming, cultivation and traditional use of these plants. Although most of the information is available on the net, we have added some information, including 10 colour photos of our own, which is not available elsewhere. Certainly this will save a considerable amount of search time. The notes are printed by inkjet on 6 sheets of A4 paper (Double-sided) i.e. 12 pages. There are 13 colour illustrations. The charge of £2 is designed to cover costs and may have to be reviewed in the near future.
