Agaves Living Sculptures for Landscapes and Containers by Greg Starr NEW
Ref: 525881116
A must-have for agave enthusiasts. Stunning photos and info from someone who actually grows them!
Gardeners and garden designers are having a love affair with agaves. It's easy to see why they're low maintenance, drought-tolerant and strikingly sculptural, with an astounding range of form and colour. Many species are strikingly variegated, and some have contrasting ornamental spines on the edges of their leaves. Fabulous for container gardening or in-the-ground culture, they combine versatility with easy growability. In Agaves, plant expert Greg Starr profiles 75 species, with additional cultivars and hybrids, best suited to gardens and landscapes. Each plant entry includes a detailed description of the plant, along with its cultural requirements, including hardiness, sun exposure, water needs, soil requirements and methods of propagation. Agaves can change dramatically as they age and this comprehensive guide includes photos showing each species from youth to maturity a valuable feature unique to this book.

Stapeliads by John Pilbeam

Stapeliads by John Pilbeam
Ref: 525431
Book details: hardbound in dust jacket; 275x210mm; 207 pages; 686 photos. NEW Published July 2010
ISBN 0 902099 91 4

The culmination of some sixty years of growing and admiring cacti and succulent plants, with a particular love affair with this wonderful, compelling group, this book is what the author has been hoping in vain that other students and writers would do for his and others' benefit.

Which theories of the experts to follow is a major headache, and with an ever deepening divide of expert opinion, there seems to be only one way to produce a work for the enthusiast and grower of these plants, to show the variety and beauty of them, especially in their flowering, and give some indication of the varying opinions. And so all the genera in use and championed by the different experts in this field in the last few decades have been included, with cross references in the captions of the pictures to indicate alternative opinions.

Here for your delight are 686 photographs of the species of all 57 genera of Stapeliads, the first such comprehensive and colourful book for growers of these intriguing and beautiful plants, with informative background on each genus, chapters on the distribution, use and abuse, cultivation, checklist, glossary and species index.

Cacti and Succulents in habitat

Cacti and Succulents in habitat

Excellent condition

* Pub. Date: August 1994
* Publisher: Cassell P L C
* Format: Hardcover, 160pp
ISBN: 0304342947

"Impressive collection of superb photos...very detailed captions."—TAXON. Now, instead of having to rely on photographs of greenhouse-bred specimens for identification, collectors can discuss disputes over classification with direct reference to the real, natural plants shown in this stunning full-color display. 160 pages, 130 color illus., 7 1/2 X 9 1/2.

The author sets out to show how easy it is to find cacti and succulents in their natural habitat, in addition to illustrating the variation in appearance within many species of cacti. The latter he explains is the reason why so many names have disappeared in recent years as they have been absorbed as synonyms of earlier named species. Based on his own travels through Bolivia; South-West United States including Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and California; and Southern Africa, each of the author's photographs is accompanied by a brief description of both plant and habitat.

The book is illustrated throughout in full colour with over 170 photographs, and each section opens with a map of the area under consideration. Many of the photographs are of a good size, and include close-ups of plants as well as wider shots showing the terrain. The text is very accessible, almost chatty in style, and the quality of the photographs is excellent, in some cases outstanding.

With a book this size, just 158pp, the coverage is obviously limited, and the range of plants quite narrow, less than 50 genera, some represented by only one example; but it is none the less interesting for this. It all makes for a fascinating study.

Also geographical and climatic information regarding California's different vegetative zones are included. Some of this information may be outdated as the book was first published in 1969, but the majority of information is still very useful to those interested in the subject. This book is packed with line drawings, color plates, and black and white photos useful for identification as well as 18 maps showing the distribution/native location of each species. The Native Cacti of California is a wonderful resource for locating the widely spread out species in the large state of California.
